PM: 12.5mi (1:56), 1000' - Twin Rocks/Horseshoe Bar
Headed out from Twin Rocks just before dusk. Hit Horseshoe from TH in :54 and made the return trip in total darkness, with just my very dim headlamp. Watched my footing carefully on the tech sections and was surprised to notch a :58+ despite limited visibility. Felt a good rush while moving swiftly through the night.
Tue, Oct 18
AM/PM: Biked to (4.5mi) and from (6mi) work today. Only 500' of climbing.
Wed, Oct 19
PM: 5mi (1:00), 3432' - William Jessup University
Easy t-mill run @ 13% incline. Leg turnover felt more efficient as run progressed. + core
Thur, Oct 20
Off - I think the body is cognizant of what is upcoming on Saturday.
Fri, Oct 21
AM: 5mi (:40), ~1,000' - Pacific Union College, Angwin
Felt good, cruised around on the xc course, cheering on the men and women during the Cal-PAC Conference Preview Meet. Ran a little harder and further than I should have.
PM: 8.5mi (1:16), 1,800' - Robie/No Hands/K2
Joe and I cruised down into the confluence and up K2 (13:10), connected to Olmstead briefly before reconnecting with the 'States trail. Descended back down into the confluence and back up to Robie. A little tired after a long day.
Sat, Oct 22
AM: ~57mi (12:30), 10,000' - Squaw Valley to Michigan Bluff
Immediately after beginning our voyage at 7:15am, I knew I was in for a long day. The legs were tired and Joe seemed to be right there with me. We ran/hiked up to the Escarpment in 1hr and enjoyed the nice (snow-free) descent into Granite Chief. It was pretty obvious well into the descent that this portion of trail has been butchered by the last few years of heavy snowfall and the lack of maintenance due to the disruptive elements. Nevertheless, it was some gorgeous, often technical, and rocky single-track. Soon enough, we were running up a jeep road and then descended through a green gate where we ran through our only small snow patch of the day. The trail T'd and Joe - recalling from his WS adventure 4mo's ago - felt maybe we needed to hang a left, but as the trail began to circle us back, it just didn't feel right. Thankfully, it was a minor deviation and we went the other way which after a mellow uphill grade, took us to Lyon Ridge.
While on Lyon, we were treated to some panoramic views of the neighboring Sierra's on both sides of the ridge, while at the same time, surprised by how rocky the terrain was. After yet another detour (some Tevis flagging took us down a road which didn't feel right so we had to backtrack), we hooked up with Red Star (thanks to some hunters who assured us we were heading in the right direction) and continued on along this beautiful stretch of trail. However, because it was taking us a good deal longer than we had anticipated, our fluid levels were diminishing and we knew we had to get to water quick. Along Lyon and Red Star, I couldn't help but have a new respect for Jurek's CR in 2004. There's a fair amount of climbing through here and at least to me, the terrain doesn't seem to be the fastest (of course, I'm sure Scott's route was much more runnable due to more trail work prior). Even Joe commented that the snow route was MUCH faster than the course we were running. 20 min faster? 30? Who knows? I would love to see Geoff, Kilian, Nick, or Tony run this stretch in order to compare.
Finally we got to Duncan Canyon (6hrs+!) and about a mile up stopped at a small creek to rehydrate (praise God!). We stopped for a good 15min and made the gentle climb up and over to Little Duncan and down to Duncan Creek for a quick refill again. Having dumped a ton of fluids back into my body, the climb up to Robinson actually felt pleasant as I was able to lock in to a comfortable rhythm. Near Little Robinson Valley, I waited for Joe (who was working through a bit of a rough patch here) and we came into Robinson in 7hrs and 15min (minus 1hr of stops/detours). We plopped down next to the green pump and made the mental calculations that since we were behind schedule, we would most likely be plugging through El Dorado Canyon in the dark. I'm not gonna lie, hitching a ride back to Michigan Bluff did sound somewhat appealing, but I knew that these next 17 or so miles of almost all downhill would be a positive change for us. So after a 10min stop, we decided to venture out straight to N43 (bypassing Little Bald Mt trail) in order to save time and hopefully make up some time. We hiked the gradual uphill grade out of Robinson and once the road shot downhill, our legs seemed to respond immediately. We ran the next 4mi's down N43 in 29:55 (even throwing in a sub-7min mile in the process) and it felt good to bomb these downs. We kept this trend through Miller's Defeat and on the hard-packed trail leading up to Dusty Corners.
Just past Dusty, we decided to skip Pucker Point to continue to save time (I know, we missed out on some great single-track) and moved along on down the road toward Last Chance. We continued at what felt like sub 8's through Last Chance and realized that - including the time it took us to hike out of Robinson - we had just covered the last 13 miles or so in 1:30. After a short bathroom break at the lip of Deadwood Cyn, we made a quick descent to swinging bridge and refilled in the creek just past the bridge.
At this point, I didn't see my legs being able to do much running up Devil's Thumb so we set into a consistent hike. Due to some recent run-off, the trail was pretty beat up. Further up the climb I ran a little bit, but my running cadence and Joe's powerful hiking cadence seemed to be the same pace. After cresting the Thumb, I was impressed at Joe's ability to run the flats and downs so well. We stopped at the green pump to make one last refill before descending into El Dorado Canyon. To help pass time and spice things up a bit, Joe had the great idea to start playing Seinfeld trivia (as we are both big fans). I must say, Joe knows his Seinfeld pretty darn well. Toward the bottom of El Dorado, the sun finally disappeared for the day and it was headlamp time for the remaining 3-ish miles. We hiked up Michigan and I started to get a bit more loopy. Joe suggested pounding the remaining water I had because in reality, I hadn't been drinking as much as I should. We both realized that Joe had consumed almost double what I had in liquids for the day. Also, I had only taken 2.5 S Caps on the day. About a 1/4mi from the top of the climb, my body seemed to come back around and we ran the remaining stretch into Michigan Bluff, done. So, 12hrs 30min for the day. Excluding Robinson to swinging bridge, it was a grind all day. Its runs that are more challenging than you expected that you hope pay dividends down the road. Joe was a great running partner. We both seemed to be there when the other needed it and I feel, that's what this sport is really all about. Community and adventure, working together, and being experienced to the fullest, in the best of times and in the worst of times. Man, I love to run, thank you God for this gift to enjoy and for those I'm privileged to enjoy it with.

Well, I've finally run the entire Western States course having yet to actually partake in the event. There's still some portions I'd like to check out. For example, Poppy trail down by French Meadows Res. and the Cavanaugh Ridge route through Deep Canyon. After Saturdays run though, I can say with certainty, the Western States spirit is alive and well. I hope I get my chance to take part this summer and feed and further fan the flame of the WS spirit. And, if I'm lucky, hope to finish and do so in a position where I can come back year after year to do it all over again. It was Jim King who first gave me a glimpse of this unquenchable WS spirit, and since, it has been a variety of important folks and events which have only further spread it.

Week of Oct. 10 - 16
PM: 10mi (1:27), 2,000' - Through Rocklin/Lincoln/Treadmill
Easy jog, mostly along Wildcat Blvd. Got bored of the flats and wanted a vertical feel. Best option was the treadmill (not ideal, but you do with what you're given). 7.5mi on road, 2.5 on t-mill @ 13% incline. + coreAM: 1hr bike ride through Rocklin and then to work (13mi, 800')
Late Pm: Short, 15min ride home (3mi, 200')
Wed, Oct 12
PM: 9mi (~1hr) - Whitney HS Track
1.5mi wu followed by 20x400 @ 78-81 w/ 1min rest between each and 1/4mi jog after every 5. Workout felt really easy and smooth. Proud of the xc team for an outstanding workout as well. 1.5mi cd. + form drillsThu, Oct 13
PM: 13mi (2:10), 1,000' - Twin Rocks/Horseshoe Bar
Easy out (1:03) and back (1:07) from TR to Horseshoe. Legs felt a little tired on the return, specifically in the hammies (expected after yesterday).
Fri, Oct 14
PM: 29mi (5:10), 5,000' - Cal St
What a suffer-fest. Underestimated the heat and didn't bring enough water. Realized this a mile from Rucky-Chucky (original plan was Foresthill to RC and back) so I turned around 14.5 into it (2:10). Was ridiculously thirsty at Cal-3 so I went down 6min hill but veered toward the river and found the "safest" place to fill. Had to do this again just after Cal-2 in a super sketchy creek bed and again after Cal-1 in Dardanelles Creek. Man, had to stay laser-focused mentally to ignore my bodies plea for liquids. You can tell I was hurting by my 3hr clip back up; also had to walk it in the last mile as my body had no power left from being dehydrated.
Sat, Oct 15
AM: Crewed for my wife as she ran her first "marathon" (course was 27.7mi) from the Auburn Overlook to Negro Bar. A mi into the race, half the field got lost (including Sara) due to their being no flagging at a pivotal intersection. Sara estimates she lost 30min trying to get back on course and once she did, was even more determined to let 'er rip. She came into Rattlesnake Bar (9mi+) in 1:50, feeling good and focused. The next spot I saw her was Sterling Pointe (1.5mi after Horseshoe Bar) flying past other guys and had made up significant time. As she came through Twin Rocks (18mi, ~3:45) she still looked smooth, but had developed some blisters. Luckily, her Dad had some thick socks on and after a quick swap, she was off again. I saw Sara again on the levee turnoff at ~22mi (1/2mi out from Cavitt Jr High and where Sierra Nevada 50 started) and as I jogged next to her for a short distance, she mentioned her feet were still hurting, but she was intent on getting it done. As I waited at the finish with family and friends, shortly thereafter, I got to see my wife not only finish her first marathon/"ultra"; but do so as the OVERALL winner in a time of 4:48 for 28-29mi (she beat the 1st place man by almost 11min). So proud of her for persevering and for accomplishing her goal of finishing. Apparently she has been bitten by the ultra bug and has her sights set on the Way Too Cool 50k in March.........I probably ran a total of 1.5mi and hiked around a bit too.
PM: 16mi (2:00), 1000' - Through Rocklin
After shaking off some early fatigue, started feeling good and probably held 7:30-7:45's with the last mile in 6:29. Jogged around very easy for 10min after that at Springview.

This week is about Sara, plain and simple. What she models day in and day out: Drive, love, strength, focus, positivity, joy, and passion (to name a few), were displayed through her running on Saturday. It would've been easy to become discouraged having lost so much time early on, but Sara kept constant prayer and focus to keep pushing on. Her spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical life worked in unison to accomplish what she set out to do. To say I am proud and honored to call her my wife would be an understatement. It's a joy to watch her grow as a woman and, to join her in that each day. I'm definitely the man I am today because of her (those who've met her would totally agree) and to see where we've come from, where we are, and where we're going as husband and wife is exciting.

Week of Oct 3 - 9
Mon, Oct 3
AM: 32mi+ (4:41), 5,500' - Devil's Thumb/Last Chance/Dusty Corners/Miller's Defeat/Mosquito Ridge
Enjoyed my bday run by getting out and traveling on foot for a good distance today. Made it about 2mi out from Robinson Flat before turning around (2:34+). Threw down a controlled, but steady and semi-quick effort on the return trip (2:07 with a 29-flat clip up Devil's Thumb to cap it off). Felt great. Traveled up to Yuba City to spend the rest of the day with family.
Tue, Oct 4
AM: 4mi (29:55) - Springview
Legs began as tired, but loosened up as the run progressed. + form drills
Wed, Oct 5
PM: 5.1mi (1:01:30), 3,500' - Treadmill
T-mill run at 13% incline. Started at 12:30/mi and increased after each mile by 15sec/mi. Legs felt great and leg turnover was sharp. +core, push ups, pull ups
Late PM: 8mi (59:30) - Clover Valley Loop & Springview
Great evening run with Sara. We started off easy, but since both of us were feeling pretty good we picked it up and were able to cruise at a decent clip.
Thur, Oct 6
PM: 6.75mi (50:00) - Huntington Beach
Ran for a bit on the bike path along the beach and continued along the PCH until Spencer and I spotted a cliff outcropping and decided to explore what was over there. Smooth run and good outing with the team. Feeling like maybe I am getting sick, but doesn't seem to be worsening.
Fri, Oct 7
AM: 10.7mi (1:20+) - Huntington Beach
Thoroughly enjoyed this morning's run with former WJU runners Aaron and Shawn. Went the opposite way from yesterday and ran the bike path along some beautiful stretches of ocean scenery. Good time with the guys. +Form drills, lunges, squats, and light core at Fairview Park as the men and women were scouting the course.
Sat, Oct 8
AM: 3mi (23:30) - Fairview Park, Costa Mesa
Ran with the guys as they did their cool down after their race. Great performances on both the women's and men's side at the Vanguard Invitational.
PM: 7mi (55:00) - Salt Creek Beach, Dana Point
Ran up and down the beach a few times. First :30 in the MT 110's and the last :25 barefoot. A little fatigued, but not lethargic feeling. Played a few hrs of smashball afterward......cross-training?
Sun, Oct 9
PM: 5.35 (34:30) - Springview
After the long drive home, laying down to rest for a bit, and having a Blue Moon; went over to the park not expecting to run an effort resembling anything remotely hard. Well, my body indicated otherwise. After 1.75mi of easy running, decided to do a random 3mi time-trial in honor of the WJU team's hard effort they put in this weekend. 3mi = 16:32 (8:21 1st loop, 8:11, 2nd loop). Ran in sweatpants and a shirt (completely unorthodox for a TT effort, but whatever, it works). Very pleased with this effort as it felt relatively easy, except for maybe the last 3/4mi. .5mi cool down + form drills

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A quality ending to an overall quality week. This week was my first real build-up in prep for NF 50. Monday's long run was by far the best I have ever felt during a training run over 30mi. Part of that was the nature of the course (14+mi of downhill sure helps), but even on the 16mi trip out (plus the finish on DT), everything seemed to be hitting well.
Furthermore, I've decided to really start focusing on form drills after a run. Up until just recently, form drills were something I did before a run/workout, but it makes sense in my mind to do them after a run due to the fact in an ultra, when one's legs are fatigued toward the end, efficient bio-mechanics are much needed. So, I'm going to continue to mimic this in training with hope that it pays off when needed during a race.
Switching gears, I was fortunate enough to see a friend at the Vanguard Inv on Saturday. Lauren Jimison is a godly woman I had the privilege of working with the Spring of 2007 when I coached distance at Capital Christian High School in Sacramento. Even at a young age, I could sense something was different about Lauren, not only in talent/ability, but by the way she exhibited Jesus' love in her and through her by her actions. Fast forward roughly 4 years and Lauren has continued to be that example, but now to an even higher degree; both physically (in the way she runs) and spiritually (in the way she lives her life). She happened to win the women's 5k in 17:10 (34sec ahead of the 2nd place girl and erased the old course record by 13sec). After congratulating her after the race and telling her she dominated, she replied with, "God is good." From what I know of Lauren, I'm confident that same response would've come with the same amount of joy had the results been strikingly different. It is such individuals in this world that give me hope and encouragement that despite all the darkness I see in this world daily, there are those who are standing with a light shining so brightly that it's impossible not to see it.

Recovered, refreshed, caught up on sleep, and quality time with my wife; a great week.
My birthday is tomorrow (the big two-seven!) and for the early portion of the day, I can think of no better way to spend it than traveling for hours in the mountains on foot; an appropriate way to celebrate one's life, in my opinion.

Recovered, refreshed, caught up on sleep, and quality time with my wife; a great week.
